What is the value of having a coach?

I have become a completely different person, my life experience is completely different. And I 100% attribute those shifts and changes to coaching.

This episode is for you if you are uncertain about what a life and business coach is. It’s also for you if you’re confused about how coaching is different from therapy or seeing a psychologist and it’s also for you if you have a business and you’re wondering whether you might need a a business coach.

The difference between therapy and coaching.

Imagine you decided that you want to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. As you’re heading up this mountain, you cross a river, you slip and you break your ankle. In a situation like this, you need a doctor right? You need medical assistance.

A therapist or psychologist is like the doctor on the mountain. They make a diagnosis, they can prescribe medication, and they can help you get back to a physical and mental state where you are ready to get back on that mountain again.

Let’s say you’re on the mountain but it’s very foggy and the path isn’t clear. You get to a fork in the road and you’re not sure whether you should go right or left. When you don’t know where to go, you will need the sherpa or the guide. A coach is like the sherpa. Your coach is your guide.

Your coach understands what you’re going through on that mountain. He or she knows what you’re afraid of. What’s going on in your mind? The fear you have of going down the wrong route. The doubts you have along the way. They know this because they have been on the mountain time and time again. They help you by guiding you to find your way. They help you face your fears. They help you be courageous. To remember why you are on this mountain. They help you see your own strength. They believe in you. And their focus is to get you to the summit.

This is how I view the difference between the two. There are obviously other nuances and different people will have a different perspective. I believe both are valuable. Both are needed, and have worked with many clients who do both therapy and coaching.

There is a coach for everyone!

There is a coach for every type of challenge or goal you can imagine. It doesn’t matter who you are or what you struggle with, there is a coach that can help you. You can get a coach to help you with your health, with your relationships, with marketing, with your marriage, with your business. If you can imagine it, there is a coach for it. This is great news because you no longer need to keep struggling or go alone!

A coach’s job is to help you get results by removing the limitations that have been placed on you by yourself and others and create the results you desire. A coach doesn’t typically tell you what to do. It depends on what the subject matter is that they coach on. Many coaches are also teachers of a method or specific process. They’re job is to guide and support you to figure out what is right for YOU and they then help you step into that new version of yourself so that you can achieve the outcomes you want.A common myth on the subject of coaching is that you only need a coach when things aren’t working. Coaching is not just for when you feel stuck. It’s not just for when things are not going according to plan. It’s not just for the trenches or the struggles. Coaching is valuable whenever there is a gap between where you are and where you want to be. There is a coach for every type of challenge or goal you can imagine.. We all have patterns that are running our lives. Coaching is useful and valuable whenever you want to achieve the results you desire, faster and with less effort.

Why every human deserves a coach:

There is a gap between where you are and where you want to be. That gap is often painful. The value of coaching lies in solving that pain, bridging the gap. If you have a strained relationship with your teenager. How valuable would it be to get that relationship back on track? For you to have the connection you want with your kids.

The value of having a coach as a woman in business:

  • A coach has your best interest at heart. Most of the time, what is in your best interest is also outside your comfort zone. It’s hard! Your brain will fight you on getting out of that comfort zone. It will fight for the familiar. For the known. Even if what is familiar is uncomfortable, it wants to keep you there because it is a familiar discomfort. A coach helps you create safety within yourself so that you can venture into the unknown with confidence. A coach helps you embrace uncertainty so that you can approach life and business with curiosity, and a sense of adventure.

  • A coach helps you see your blindspots. They show you the patterns that keep you stuck. The patterns that feel so normal and every day to you that don’t even notice you have a pattern!

  • A coach shows you a different perspective. They show you an alternative way. Often a way you didn’t even know existed. They show you the options. You cannot solve a problem from the same place where the problem was created. A coach is outside the problem. They have a different view.

  • A coach holds belief for you. Especially when you cannot hold it yourself.

  • A coach listens to you. They give you their full attention. This in itself is an underrated benefit of having a coach because we are living in a world where everyone is so focused on themselves and we rarely get someone’s undivided attention anymore! Having a coach means you have someone that wants to see you succeed and they are on that journey with you up to where you cross that finish line.

  • A coach pushes you to go for your dreams and to live your life as an active participant rather than a bystander.

  • A coach asks the uncomfortable questions so that you can break free from what’s holding you back. They call you on your bullshit. You pay them to see beyond the drama. They’re not your friend, and although they will always be kind, they’re not afraid to hurt your feelings. They don’t hold back. They take you to the places that a friend would avoid. They go with you to those dark places and they help you shine a light so that you can see things as they are, not worse than they are.

  • A coach helps you to think differently. They help you shift your perspective and look at things not from the problem side but from the solution side and then they help you construct a plan.

  • A coach helps you distinguish between your thoughts and the facts. So often we make decisions based on our thoughts and how we feel in the moment instead of making decisions in our business based on the data, the facts that are in front of us.

  • A coach helps you stay on track and they reel you back in when shiny objects distract you.

  • A coach helps you determine and prioritise what matters most to you.

  • A coach helps you to increase and level up your self concept and problem solve at a higher level. They help you to THINK and BE like the person who has the things you want.

  • A coach helps you learn the skill of managing your emotions. So that you aren’t at the mercy of them anymore, reacting to life and the challenges that come with growing your business.

  • A coach helps you to FEEL your emotions. So you can stop buffering, and avoiding and deal with the things that are a challenge in your life and business head on.

  • A coach helps you maximise what is working. They help you see life the way you would like it to be.

  • A coach will help you make more money and also manage it better.

  • A coach helps you feel excited about your life and your business again and believing that nothing is impossible any more.

  • A coach celebrates you and helps you celebrate your own accomplishments.

  • A coach helps you to stay consistent.

  • A coach helps you to get through failures faster and to learn from those failures.

  • A coach helps you to feel less stressed. They help you to understand yourself better, to clearly define what you want. Which is a big deal because most people don’t know what they want.

  • A coach helps you keep your attention on believing and focusing on the result you want to achieve and what you want to create even when those results aren’t in your reality yet.

  • A coach helps keep in you aligned action. A coach helps you show up for you every single week.

Imagine 52 weeks of not falling off track and working towards your goals.

Imagine not falling off the path.

Imagine having someone in your pocket that is like a business partner that loves your business just as much as you do. That wants you to succeed just as much as you do. But they don’t own any equity in your business!
