How much energy and attention are you giving to the outcomes you don’t want in your life and business? There is this scene in Alice in Wonderland directed by Tim Burton, Alice is about to slay the Jabberwocky and as this big monster appears she says to Hatter. This is impossible. And for a moment. Alice doubts herself. But then she remembers something her dad always used to say: “Sometimes I believe as many as six impossible things before breakfast.”

Sometimes, we are so focused on what we don’t want, we spend so much time in disbelief that impossibility becomes our norm.

As business owners, and entrepreneurs, we create services and products from ideas. We build businesses from our imagination. When we start a business or we add a new offer or product line to an existing business, we first need belief that this will turn out the way we want it to. If we don’t believe that it is possible then we won’t pursue it. We use belief to build our realities as entrepreneurs all the time. As we’re building and growing and going about our day to day activities, we are constantly coming up against challenges, things that don’t work out as we had hoped. We start to, unconsciously, stack one failure after the other. And before we know it, we have lots of proof of things not working. Of putting in the work, but not getting the outcome we wanted. We give meaning to those moments that don’t go as planned. We tell ourselves all sorts of stories and little by little we lean ourselves more and more toward what we don’t want.

If we’re not intentional about stacking the moments of triumph, the things that did work (especially the things we thought wouldn’t but then did), we are building belief on the wrong side of the possibility equation.

We need to shift our perspective on what seems impossible.

Many people mistakenly think that doubt is just a normal part of being human. That it is something that happens to us. And that we have no control over it. We think that faith in something is belief and that doubt is the absence of belief. But doubt is still belief. It is simply belief in the outcomes we don’t want. This is important because we get to choose what we believe, and if doubt is belief in what we don’t want, then we also know that doubt is a choice.

We have a say in the matter.

Our thoughts and what we choose to believe creates our experience. Our thoughts create our results because what we think, impacts how we feel, and how we feel directly impacts what we do or don’t do. If we’re always only focusing on all the reasons why something is impossible, it will become harder and harder to spot the opportunities, to see how it could be possible. The more we feed our doubts, the harder and harder it becomes to be resourceful, to be bold, to take risks, to expand what we think is possible and as a result expand our vision for our lives and ultimately our lived experience.

As Alice fights the Jabberwocky, she starts counting six things that she thought were impossible but that actually weren’t in wonderland.

  1. Cats can disappear

  2. Animals can talk.

  3. Cake can make you bigger (this is true outside wonderland as well)

As she names the impossible things she becomes stronger. More confident. Until she slays the beast.

My message for you today is to remember that your mind is incredibly powerful. The more proof you can gather on things that once seemed impossible but that were in fact possible, the more your mind will open itself to possibility.

If you’ve got a notebook ready answer the following two questions for yourself:

  1. What did you once think was impossible but you were wrong?

  2. What are you choosing to believe before breakfast?

Do those things expand you? Or do they keep you small? Do they serve you in creating the life and business you want?

Perhaps it is time to re-evaluate.

Perhaps it’s time to start imagining again, to choose possibility, and to look at your big audacious goals and ask:

What if it is possible?
