Ep #67 Hustling vs Hard Work

Why Hard Work is necessary if you want to succeed as a mom entrepreneur.

Hey mama!

Hustling.

I have lots of thoughts about it.

We see gurus advocating that

  • business should be easy,

  • we are doing it wrong if it feels frustrating

  • If you love what you do you’ll never work a day in your life

The truth is.

Business is hard.

Most days are frustrating.

And although we love being entrepreneurs…some days we hate it.

Anti-hustle culture has created a dangerous belief that hard work is a problem.

It is not.

We WANT to work hard.

We DON’T want to hustle.

There is a difference.

What is hustling exactly?

The Oxford dictionary defines “hustle” as forceful action, pushing hard.

Hustling is when we believe that more equals more. If we do more, we will achieve more.

Hustling is taking action from insufficiency. Believing that there isn’t enough to go around and that we need to grab it before someone else does.

Hustling is rooted in scarcity.

Hustle is when we don’t give ourselves time to rest and recover. It’s when we push ourselves to the point of burnout and feel exhausted after a big launch or push in our business.

Hustling is when we’re taking action from a place of fear. Doing things because our competition is doing it. Taking action because we need to be first.

All hustle actions stem from this one thought…there isn’t enough.

It’s believing that for one to survive, the other needs to die.

Hard work is different.

Important disclaimer: Just because things are hard doesn’t mean it can’t also be easy. And just because it’s hard doesn’t mean we cannot enjoy the heck out of it.

Hard work is rooted in sufficiency. Belief that there is enough for everyone and that we have everything we need to be successful.

Hard work is believing that your clients are your clients and that shops down the road are not your competition (even if they do what you do).

With hard work, we aren’t concerned about what others are doing. When we do look to others it’s for inspiration and not to be better.

When we’re in hard work we believe that people are already there and that they are ready (and want) to work with us.

Hard work is having a plan and executing it.

Hard work is making decisions from a place of understanding that your success doesn’t take anything away from anyone.

Hard work is committing to your goals, staying focused and not getting stuck in indecision.

Hard work is thinking in a new way.

When you’re working hard you expect to fail. You also expect to win.

Working hard is doing things that create leverage in your business. It is the activities that create the output you want with the least amount of effort.

Hard work is getting a return for your time invested.

Hard work is staying consistent. Being resourceful. Trying lots of things and having fun along the way.

Hustling and hard work might look similar on the surface.

The actions might even be the same.

The difference is the thoughts, beliefs, and emotions that fuel those actions.
